What's New: Spring at Fiver

We’re thrilled to share that Fiver will kick off its 20th anniversary celebration this spring with our 2019 Benefit on May 21st.  What will follow are events both in New York City and at Camp Fiver to celebrate twenty years of empowering children to make positive life choices.  These events include a reunion for past staff and alumni, a summer retreat hosted by our board of directors, and more events to come this fall through next spring, culminating with our benefit in 2020. 

Alumni Week

In January, we welcomed back our alumni during our annual Alumni Week. Activities included an induction ceremony for our 2018 graduates, celebrating our anniversary class of 2008, and gathering alumni from as far back as 2007 with staff and friends of Fiver. The week culminated with a career panel hosted by Google. Alumni had the opportunity to speak with Google employees, tour the space, and learn about employment opportunities.

A Toast to Spring

Earlier this month A Toast to Spring kicked off our benefit season. Hosted by one of our corporate partners, White and Case, the event gathered alumni, staff, donors, and volunteers. Inspiring words from Christie Ko, our executive director, and two Fiver alumnae, Osato and Esohe Aibangbee, energized the room. As we prepare to enter our 20th year, we are excited to share the next chapter of our story with you.

Mid-Winter Recess

Over the Midwinter break, our 4th - 6th graders learned about fire safety with the FDNY, went bowling, and learned about local wildlife at Prospect Park. Our 7th & 8th graders explored representation and how past and present activists have advocated for change. Students attended a showing of the award-winning movie, Spiderman into the Spider Verse, and after the movie, created their own superheroes. Other activities included learning about activist Frida Kahlo and visiting the historic Stonewall Inn to discuss LGBTQ civil rights. Our high school participants spent the week sharpening their networking skills, fine-tuning their resumes, and visiting local companies to learn more about their post-secondary options. The week culminated with a Black Panther themed Battle of the Sessions. Students were challenged to work together as a team to complete tasks and save "Black Panther."
