COVID-19 Response

Utilizing the support of Fiver alumni, seasonal staff, and remote volunteers from all over the world, our program staff has begun holding virtual one-on-ones with Fiver families and hosting google hangouts with groups of Fiver students and parents. In addition to providing one-on-one support via Zoom and Google Hangout, our program staff and interns are sharing self-care tips, education resources, and helpful tricks for maintaining social-emotional health while practicing social distancing.

When asked about our team’s individual outreach efforts, one Fiver Parent stated “ I really appreciate Natasha [our 9th & 10th grade program supervisor] communicating and checking in with myself and daughter separately. My daughter always looks less frazzled after speaking to Natasha.” Not only do these hangouts offer opportunities to provide social-emotional support, but they offer our Fivers and their families time to have fun and socialize with their peers while remaining at home. Mabel, our 5th and 6th grade Program Associate shared, “It was an amazing experience to be able to share this virtual space with the kids during this uncertain time. The kids had fun seeing each other, laughing, and just forgetting about all the problems going on at the moment. The virtual group continued our mission to empower kids to be great leaders, using technology and advocating for themselves through new experiences. It also brightened my day and reminded me that their smiles are the reason why I do what I do everyday.”

As of April 2, 2020 the Fiver team has provided over 330 interactions via email, phone, video chat, and social media. Since we started holding online hangout sessions, we’ve held 28 hangouts and a total of 109 participants have attended these hangouts.
